BTW: about playing Windows/GOG games on Linux i can really recommend using the flatpak project "Bottles" under pretty much any #Linux ! i am only using it for a few weeks now for games and apps that are not available to me on steam. Best gaming / windows apps experience under Linux EVER for me!! give it a try if you don't know it yet! happy Linux Gaming!!

Reddit is going crazy about the Switch 2 using "encryption", to lock out third party docks, but as far as I can tell that's misinformation.

Nothing in the logs looks like encryption, it's just a proprietary protocol. Manufacturers clone those all the time!

Not following standards is not nice, but saying this dooms third party docks or has any DMCA implications is nonsense. In fact the article already points out one compatible third party dock.

The original switch also "locked out" standard adapters, just in a simpler way only checking the device ID.

Nintendo has used actual encryption to lock out third party peripherals before (Wii Remote control extensions). If they cared enough they'd have done that again.

the incompatibility with the standard is what everyone should care about, and calling it encryption while wrong gets the point across
you can go get a generic usb c to hdmi and usb dock for lets say 50 eur and use it on an android (with usb dp), an iphone (15+), a deck, an ally, a macbook,...

why does nintendo get to opt out of the standard (or add vendor specific extensions that break interop)?
why include usbc? add a proprietary port and go back to the hell that was pre usbc

in reply to SilverDiamond

@SilverDiamond Standard docks already didn't work with the Switch 1. The article is claiming Nintendo is somehow adding encryption in the Switch 2, but it's not encryption and it won't affect users. Dedicated Switch 2 docks will exist like Switch 1 docks did, and saying things are somehow different just because they added some vendor specific commands to the story is not good journalism.

I just read @rasterweb ’s post about sharing code and it was poignant because I’ve recently stopped sharing my code. I’ve done this because I don’t want to keep feeding LLM’s, especially because one of my projects is intended to make them obsolete, but could be used in its incomplete form to their benefit.

I hate this, but I don’t know what else to do. Maybe I can share my code in physical form (a zine!) so that it’s very unlikely to be scraped into an LLM?

The #Forgejo monthly report was published ✨

Forgejo v12.0 branch was cut on 25 June, for a planned release on 17 July. Forgejo v11.0.2 was released on 18 June, addressing several bugs. Forgejo Runner v6.4.0 introduced offline caching support.

The minimum required Git version has been bumped and the search has been improved.

There is strong enthusiasm for translating Forgejo.

User following with #ActivityPub has progressed and a new #NLnet grant has been accepted.

in reply to Forgejo

@forgejo @lykso But, I wouldn't expect that federation improves the situation with LLM scrapers. Rather the opposite! #ActivityPub is a very open protocol and it will make it rather easier than harder for scraping instances to collect all the code and context.
I think, we need ethical, FOSS LLMs that value the author rights, e.g. crediting each bit where essential (non-trivial) information was taken from and, of course, obeying to licences! Thus, e.g., GPL code must be relicensed by GPL and not to be mixed with non-free (GPL-incompatible) code.
