We're as frustrated as everyone else with these phishing attacks. mastodon.social had new sign-ups in approval mode this week to limit the impact, but offenders targeted other instances and compromised existing accounts. We take the problem very seriously; we're suspending and blocking as quickly as possible, as well as actively working on countermeasures.

It will be a Windows service you install into your Wine prefix (no GUI). The initial version will just expose all Spout senders automatically as PipeWire virtual cameras. In the future there will be some kind of portal integration instead (which is required for Flatpak).
It's Flatpak on the Steam/Proton side that would be an issue, I think OBS should be fine as long as the existing PW plugin already works with Flatpak. But I might have missed something, @tytan652 knows more ^^
Also this does require Proton right now, Spout2 doesn't work with upstream Wine yet sadly.

Honestly after what I've seen about spout2, I would expect window capture to perform better.
The only reason to use this is to work with Windows apps that already support Spout2 and where plain window capture has limitations (no transparency, showing GUI when not desired, resolution/pixel perfect issues).
I don't expect the initial implementation to take long, it should be a few weeks at most. I can probably get it mostly working in one more stream. The portal integration to make it work with Flatpak Steam will take longer.

So I had a feeling, but... after today, I can confirm that Spout2 is VERY poorly designed, in ways that affect performance and stability which can't be fixed without a complete redesign.
It's a real shame the entire Windows VTuber world relies on this mess of a system...
It uses a *single* shared texture, and uses CPU side synchronization to mutex updates and reads. You end up doing CPU blocking copies on both ends.
This is horrible for GPU performance, it's basically the worst way you could do this short of full CPU data copying.
Even with the "serverless" architecture, it wouldn't have been too difficult to at least avoid all the CPU blocking... you could have a small pool of shared textures, and reference count them...
Coming from the Linux world where we have PipeWire and Wayland and DMA-BUF feedback and modifiers and and explicit and implicit sync and sync objects and everything can just fly around on the GPU with zero CPU involvement and zero copies and in the optimal format... this hurts..
but we need drivers to make it interact with existing windows apps (like, redirect any app sound to pipewire) There is opensource solution: github.com/eiz/SynchronousAudi… But it does not update now because signing newer versions is almost impossible. Yes, we can run jack/pipewire/pulseaudio/etc on windows with own APIs, but it will not be useful for existing windows software

Okay I really need to stop reading this code. I'm pretty sure their sync primitive is broken across GPUs (but I guess Spout2 doesn't work across GPUs anyway?) and I just found out it uses a semaphore as a frame counter by decrementing it once then incrementing it twice each frame for no reason...
It's local texture sharing, there's no network anywhere. It stays on the GPU.
Edit: unless you mean while streaming? OBS would copy the final rendered frame to the CPU before compression (if software encoding) or after (if hardware). But that has nothing to do with Spout2.
At least it isn't as bad as what the people who prioritize security wind up doing, which is CPU rendering followed by many copies of the uncompressed data and finally software compression! Oh, the sadness of finding that the CPU the only place one can provide the strongest isolation, so those for whom security is the top priority must leave all the accelerators almost or entirely idle…
@64kb You need either OS or graphics API specific integration, and since two of the three major OSes have proprietary graphics APIs, it doesn't really make a difference.
