So for the life of me i cannot figure out atari 7800 artifacting

At this point - long shot but has anyone figured this out?
like. I can get the basics to work. I have stable artifact colors. Light+dark stripes produce saturated solid colors. Except… those colors don't match the videos at all

Here's our reference: youtube.com/watch?v=qHfC0gwkW4…. The first tower (Tower of Eyes, 0:49) is dull grey + blue platforms. The second one (Realm of Robots, 3:10) is bright orange+pink/purple platforms. The fifth one (Broken Path, 6:53) is bright green + magenta platforms.

Note that the submarine sections before the towers do indeed depict orange/green tower there, and the game is using 160 mode there, so that's not artifacting but an explicitly set color.

Good, now we established how it should look like.

Ok, so how does that look in RGB? Well, the towers are monochrome. They are striped in a very specific way, so that background artifacts in one "direction" and platforms in the other "direction". Occasionally you see blobs of the base color (elevators) so you can gauge that.

So, what do I have? Currently I have this, that was the best "balance" I could find. But it's clearly wrong. The first tower is greenish, the other 2 look closer but less saturated. Also look at the magenta enemy on the first screenshot - also desaturated.

The reason it's desaturated is that without that the colors get worse. Broken Path looks better this way, and close enough to the video, but the other 2? The first tower is properly green now, and the second one is puke yellow.

If I go further, eventually every tower will be green+magenta.

Now, this is NTSC we're talking about so it's never gonna match perfectly + the video is a capture of RF signal so it's blurrier and noisier), but it can't be that different?

I am confident it works correctly for Broken Path. After all, the pixels there are grayscale, so this is pure artifacting. But the other towers use colored pixels, so it's artifacting but also mixed with the original color somehow. But how?

This is not hue rotation - it also changes the color of Broken Path to yellow, while the magenta enemy in the first tower becomes bluer or redder.

So - what am I doing wrong here? How is color mixing supposed to work here? I've tried a lot of things and out of ideas

One possibility is that this is just not precise enough (this is a shader and I'd need to make the composite signal so precise it would be infeasible to measure. But also it can't be it, can it?

Like, this is probably good enough for, say, Apple II's high res mode. The RGB picture is monochrome there anyway.

Here tho? I need to figure out how to deal with colored pixels AND artifacts on top at the same time.

I think you're going to need more data for this... have you compared output of RF machines vs. composite or s-video modified ones?

I think there are too many factors involved to figure it out from some game screenshots... what I would do is create a bunch of test patterns with many colors/artifact patterns, try them out on a real machine (or multiple, with different output setups), and use them to try to figure out what the color mixing curves/function is. At the end of the day you could even just turn it all into a lookup texture.

Here is some discussion on some of the subtleties of the TIA video output: retrosix.wiki/tia-video-faults… (since you're dealing with mixing the chroma and luma signals, those subtle timing issues probably play a part in how they mix, though I don't know how the 7800 compares)

Checking composite modded one would be interesting indeed. My problem is that i don’t see how these colors can happen at all, blue in particular.

I didn’t see that article, thanks - some of this likely applies to 7800/maria as well

Lookup texture doesn’t work in my case unfortunately, since this is a generic filter (mostly; obv colorbursts are different between systems), so it needs to account for other systems too.

By lookup texture I meant for the color mixing. So like, if you manage to get enough data points to have a reasonable dataset of how different colors mix together, it could just be implemented as one or more textures indexed by luma/chroma or some derived components if you can't come up with an analytical construction that's accurate enough.

Did you see this page? Apparently both the generated colors and the artifact colors vary from console to console and even with temperature... so I'm not even sure if there's such a thing as a proper ground truth!

I have, but I know it’s not the case here - 1. The elevators in each tower are solid color and serve as a reference -> it’s not that different on that video, and 2. Broken Path tower looks the same and is not, say, yellow +blue -> artifact colors also match. It’s only the interaction between the 2 ^^

What I should do, realized always after asking, is make a texture with just the correct colors and see how that gets modulated, then compare to blue stripes

Are you doing the math in the Y/C domain or some other colorspace? I get the feeling the best way to try to approach this would be to take the raw 7800 color values (4+4 bit) as input, build up a line buffer of the composite color signal with a lot of oversampling, and then try different mixing approaches for Y/C and pulse shaping/delays for the input signals. Then you run it though a composite decoder to produce YUV/RGB only at the output.

Once you have something close with that method you could probably optimize it to be less brute force, and at that point you could generate as many samples as you want since you'd have a reference implementation ^^

ถามว่าทำไมไม่กินให้เรียบร้อยก่อนไปสนามบิน ก็ตอบเลยว่าการจราจรมันเอาแน่เอานอนไม่ได้ บางสายการบินก็พนักงานไม่พอเช็คอิน ขอรีบไปถึง ดร็อปกระเป๋าแล้วค่อยกินดีกว่า
