Rust-Based Redox OS Begins Implements X11 Support, GTK3 Port

For those not liking the direction of the Linux desktop with its Wayland-first focus, the Rust-written Redox OS has begun rolling out X11 support within its Orbital display server...
phoronix.com/news/Redox-OS-Imp…

in reply to Phoronix

Well, for an OS build with Rust, adding X11 seems wrong.
in reply to Phoronix

So Redox will become just another "linux distro" just with the custom kernel... That's exactly what we need... 🙄 There are still Linux distros not wayland-focused, so why using Redox? Redox should use it's own tech stack, own GUI just to make it consistent. Using x11, gtk and other stuff from Linux is just repeating Linux's problems

Off-topic, but someone I know (excitedly) sent me a link to 'cat faced' plant seeds for sale on eBay UK. I've since given myself a headache from eye-rolling at the fact 203 Brits saw AI-generated slop and thought: "wow, these must be real, I'll grow some!". Given the shamelessness of the grift, I hope the actual seeds aren't for some kind of non-native, invasive species...
in reply to omg! ubuntu

I've tried to explain to my mom about AI-generated images after she showed me one of a plane falling apart in mid air. She thought it was real.
in reply to omg! ubuntu

The grift predates the AI crap. My mother-in-law saw multicoloured roses seeds on eBay 10 years ago with a photoshopped pic and asked me to order them for her.

#SaveState #OpenSource #Linux

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I'm a bit dissapointed. It's not much better than just copying your files, since you still need to find the saves and make profiles.
Also there's no implementation for something like webdav to save in your own cloud.
And it should store it's own config in the same folder since it claims to be portable, but it saves it in the standard ~/.local/share/SaveState/, so it's not really portable...

Ubuntu Developers Discuss The Difficult Issue Of Splitting Up Firmware Packages

Ubuntu developers have recently started a discussion over possibly splitting up the "linux-firmware" package into multiple sub-packages given the growing size of all the different firmware binaries needed to support the diverse range of hardware supported by the Linux kernel. Sched_Ext Boasts CPU Selection Improvements In Linux 6.16

One of the niftiest kernel innovations to be upstreamed into Linux over the past year was sched_ext for extensible scheduler behavior in allowing kernel schedulers to be implemented via BPG programs. Sched_ext can allow for interesting scheduler improvements with a variety of use-cases and showed much potential even before being upstreamed. The work on sched_ext isn't yet over though an…
