If you're wondering about the math for 1G and 10G Ethernet, they use a more efficient physical layer where 1 baud is more than 1 bit (and more than enough for overhead and error correction on top).
Also USB2.0 is super cursed. It's actually 480Mbps if you send enough "0" bits. If you send too many "1" bits, then it drops down to 411Mbps. Variable speed depending on the data?!
Of course it's also very inefficient for other reasons so you never get anywhere close to those speeds anyway...

I was thinking of using Ethernet in place of USB, since Ethernet is apparently significantly more efficient. So one would keep the USB connector, but the protocol that runs over it is Ethernet
@mezzodrinker Ethernet isn't necessarily more efficient. 10Gbps Ethernet actually transfers "12.8 Gbps" of raw bits to get the 10Gbps throughput, it's just not marketed using that number.
@mezzodrinker IIRC 10GBASE-T's raw data rate is actually only 11.2 Gbps. The modulation is kind of like QAM128 (but not exactly that) at 400 Mbd, so you get 400e6 x 7 = 2.8 Gbps per pair. Other 10G Ethernet physical media use entirely different encodings e.g. CX4 is similar to PCIe 1.0.
@bwh @mezzodrinker It's PAM16 at 800Mbaud, so the raw symbol rate is 800 * 4 * 4 = 12.8 Gbaud. Pairs of symbols are then interpreted as coordinates in a QAM-like coding scheme called DSQ128, which encodes 128 symbols = 7 bits per pair of line symbols. That's where you get the 11.2 Gbps at that point in the encoding.
Unlike true QAM, both coordinates are not transmitted simultaneously in DSQ128 as quadrature signals, but simply as consecutive symbols. So we can't say it's "400 Mbaud" per pair.
@mezzodrinker Right, DSQ128 is what I was failing to remember. I guess we're looking at the same thing in different ways. My understanding comes mostly from presentations by some of the people who developed 10GBASE-T, but then filtered through nearly 20 years of fallible memory. It does seem strange to talk of a symbol rate of 800 Mbd while not being able to pass frequencies much above 400 MHz. (I seem to remember that being almost a hard limit for 100 m of twisted-pair.)
as a networking person: please don't use 10Gbase-T. It's a pile of power-wasting, overheating garbage with short range. 10Gbase-R at 10.3125Gbd is the only real 10GE.
(Which means optical fibre. Did I mention that while yes it is a bit more fragile than copper cable, it's nowhere near as fragile as people think?)
Sadly Apple does not make Macs with SFP+ slots, only 10GBASE-T ports, so I have no choice there... Same with my ISP's ONU and most combined Thunderbolt docks...
I use 10GBASE-SR between switches in different places, and DACs between neighbor switches and machines with PCIe cards.
my favorite part about this is that this is completely user visible. you can plug in an usb drive not all the way (to cut off the ss connections) and transfer an all ones file and an all zeros file and you'll see the speed difference
@whitequark USB 2.0 speeds close to the theoretical limit are a statistical error. whitequark, who knows too much about USB to make it work at those speeds is a statistical outlier adn should not have been counted
@eloy @whitequark That number seems to be around the real-world limit for bulk transfers with real hardware, you don't need a Glasgow specifically. That's for just pumping data out nonstop though, if you start having commands and replies that adds overhead without perfect pipelining...
I heard somewhere that you can actually get more with carefully planned isochronous transfers, but nobody wants lossy data...
@eloy @whitequark This has some numbers, the absolute maximum of the protocol for bulk is apparently slightly under 426 Mbps. I don't know where the rest of the overhead goes...

Ah yeah, the good old "bit stuffing". I think for the time it was introduced, USB 2.0 was quite awesome (my only real grudge is not using another separate ground signal to have separate power/data ground). But yeah, it hasn't aged that well.
the reason for that in particular is "bitstuffing" which is an error detection pattern, which is somewhat important for a hardware protocol that relies on a potentially long cable length and variably capable hardware on the other end. basically, it gets shot in the foot by its own complexity
It's not an error detection pattern, it's there to make clock recovery possible. Errors can sometimes cause bit stuffing violations, but the primary purpose of bit stuffing is not error detection. The protocol has CRCs for that.
interesting! i'd imagine there can be problems with signal integrity if someone doesn't use good cables (say, cat5 or better)? not that you can really find <=cat4 cables nowadays but still interesting to think about
That's why those protocols have forward error correction! 125Mbaud x 4 is 500Mbaud, you need 2 bits per symbol for 1Gbps which is 4 levels but it uses 5. The extra level is headroom for error correction.
But yeah you need CAT5 for 1G and CAT6 for 10G at minimum. The minimum spec for 100M and 1G is the same because 1G has better encoding and uses all 4 pairs (and because 100M didn't use all the available bandwidth), but for 10G even with better encoding you still need better cable.
@lina I'm fairly sure there's no error correction in 1000BASE-T. The redundancy allows encoding in a way that supports clock recovery and avoids any DC current, and also allows for special codes to indicate the start and end of a frame
@bwh @lina@tech.lgbt I don't think 10GBASE-T uses Trellis, just a clever thing where they LDPC the "low bits" in the constellation and transmit the "high bits" without error correction, because as long as the line errors don't exceed a certain magnitude correcting the low bits will automatically correct the high bits (as long as you pick the closest candidate constellation point when correcting).
@lina@tech.lgbt I've been running 10 Gb over about 50 m of 20 years old CAT5e for about half a year, and it surprisingly worked (it stopped suddenly, at which point I finally used CAT7 I bought at the same time as the 10G switches; I still run 10G over shorter spans of CAT5e).
@jernej__s @lina@tech.lgbt 5e is fine for shorter lengths, it's just not guaranteed to work. I guess I should have said "you need a new cable spec". Your old cable might be good enough to meet the requirements anyway ^^
@siguza I think that's a myth, it's just because Intel controllers are backed by bottlenecked PCIe or something like that... I don't think Apple native controllers have that limitation.
And either way the bandwidth is still there, it's just used for different purposes...
